Outsider Misses & Failures

Working Together across Difference: Some Considerations on Emotions and Political Practice

by Uma Narayan

What the Outsider misses that the Insider grasps:

  1. Minimizing the emotional costs of oppression
  2. Missing the subtler manifestations of oppression
  3. Not making connections or failing to see oppression in new contexts

Failures of Outsiders that reveal a lack of understanding and cause harm to Insiders:

  1. Overt Denial of the Validity of the Insider’s Understanding and/or Response
  2. Accusations of Paranoia
  3. Insensitive Reactions to an Insider’s Response
  4. Failure to Avoid Crude and ‘Stereotypic’ Generalizations about Insiders
  5. Failure to See Why Something That is Not Explicitly Insulting to a Person or Group may be Implicitly So
  6. Inappropriate Judgements About What Insiders Ought to Do or Feel
